POLAR-1, set to be commissioned at the South Pole in the fall of 2012, will be the first in a projected array of ten next-generation, polarization-sensitive receivers. With a large-format focal plane camera integrated with a 1.6 meter reflective telescope, POLAR-1 will be able to detect and characterize B-mode polarization and distinguish lensing effects from the cosmic gravitational wave background. When completed, it will be the most sensitive CMB polarimeter currently in operation.
