Graduate Student Research Forum

Welcome to the home of the Center for Astrophysics' Graduate Student Research Forum! The research forum is meant as a way for graduate students (and others in the CfA community) to come together to learn about the research carried out here. Every Tuesday at 4:00 PM during the semester, the forum will start with refreshments (beer included!) and socializing Then, a talk by a someone from the CfA, typically Harvard faculty or SAO staff, will start. During these talks, the speaker will introduce their research in an informal way. To preserve the informal nature of these talks a couple of guidelines have been established. First, only chalk + blackboard presentations are allowed (a handout or two are acceptable). Second, a projector may be used briefly if either a transparency or a movie from a computer would help the presentation, but there is to be ABSOLUTELY NO POWERPOINT-LIKE SLIDES. Such presentations tend to lead to way too much material being presented in the allotted time. The talks will be 40 minutes long with about 10 minutes left for questions so that the grad students can get back to their work. We'll try to finish promptly at shortly after 5 pm.

New as of Jan. 23, 2009: The graduate student research forum will start up again with a post-doc / grad student mixer on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009. It will take place in Phillips and start at 4:00 PM. The list of speakers that we have so far is here. If you were placed on this list in error, please contact Robert J. Harris The schedule that we have so far for the spring semester is here

A note for the historically minded: If you have been directed here from the Google docs setup recently, please note that they were (very) temporary, and they will not be maintained past the haiku session. Come here for all your research forum needs!

Currently, here is a link to the haiku session website, in case one is interested in going to it to review who gave what talk.
Here is a link to the schedule for the research forum for Fall 2008.

For questions / comments about website, forum, or the haiku session, please contact Robert J Harris . Thanks!
