SOHO-23: Understanding a Peculiar Solar Minimum

There are a variety of methods for getting to the Asticou Inn and a brief outline of some of those possibilities are provided here. All options start off at one of five airports which have rental car and van/bus companies listed on their websites. Driving directions from each airport are provided under Driving Directions. The information provided here may not be complete however, it is accurate to our knowledge.

The Island Explorer Bus web site has an excellent section on car-free travel to Mount Desert Island.

Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) The Bar Harbor airport is supported only by US Airways. Rental cars are available at the airport, and there are several taxi services (http://atyourservicetaxi.com and http://local.yahoo.com/ME/Ellsworth/Travel+Lodging/Taxi+Services). The free Island Explorer buses operate between the airport and the Bar Harbor Village Green. The bus stop is located near the front entrance of the Airport. The Island Explorer Bus can take you directly from the Bar Harbor Airport to fairly near the Ledgelawn Inn in Bar Harbor. To reach the other Inns, you must take the bus from the airport to the Bar Harbor Village Green and transfer from there to the Jordan Pond route to Northeast Harbor. You must request a stop at your destination.

Bangor International Airport (BGR) The Bangor airport is the second closest to Northeast Harbor and supports a larger selection of airlines, flights and ground transportation options. A shuttle bus runs from here to Bar Harbor however, reservations are required. Check their website for details and contact information.

Logan International Airport - Boston (BOS) US Airways (Colgan Air) provides non-stop flights to Bar Harbor. Delta supports non-stop flights to Bangor and one plane change options are available with other airlines. From the Boston area, Greyhound has service to Bangor ME where transportation to Northeast Harbor is available at the Bangor International Airport (see above). Amtrak train service is available from the Boston area to Portland Maine and Greyhound bus service is available from there to Bangor Maine.

Manchester Boston Regional Airport - New Hampshire (MHT) There are no direct flights from Manchester to Bar Harbor or Bangor airports. The only flights found involve multiple plane changes at airports south of this location. Rental cars are available at the MHT airport.

Portland International Jetport - Maine (PWM) There are no direct flights from Portland to Bar Harbor or Bangor airports. Rental cars are available at the PWM airport and Greyhound bus service is available from Portland to Bangor.
