Title: Surprises and Puzzles on Our Sun

Speaker: Eric R. Priest

Abstract: A summary is given of some of the major puzzles in Solar Physics, which are of wide importance for astrophysics in general, such as:

How does the Sun affect the Earth's climate ?

How is the magnetic field generated ?

How is the solar wind accelerated ?

How is the corona heated ?

How do solar flares occur ?

In each case, these questions have multiple parts, some of which have recently been answered with the help of spectacular space observations, while others are being refined in ways that will be described.

Reference for students: Lunch with the students will be on Friday, December 15th at 12:00 in A-101.
