Title: To be or not to be active

Abstract: The occurrence and driving force of nuclear activity in galaxies is examined, using samples of nearby objects. Investigations at radio-wavelengths provide a reliable AGN census, whereas optical integral field data yield intriguing information concerning the AGN mechanism. Evidence for an AGN-starformation symbiosis will be addressed.
