Title: The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey

Speaker: John Peacock

Abstract: The `two-degree field' spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian 4m Telescope is being used by a UK-Australian consortium to perform a redshift survey of 250,000 galaxies. Currently, the survey has reached the 60,000 mark, making it by far the largest and most detailed existing study of the large-scale distribution of galaxies. This talk will review the scientific context for the survey, present some details of the observational methods being used, and show some of the early cosmological results.

Student Lunch: Friday 10/8 at 12:00 in A-101.
