Title: Brown Dwarfs in Regions of Star Formation

Abstract: In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the number of objects of very low mass (brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects) observed in regions of star formation. Simultaneously, there has been a growing debate on the mechanism by which these objects form, and alternatives to the most conservative idea that they form like solar-mass stars have been proposed. In my talk, I will first summarize the brown dwarf formation discussion, and I will then review a number of observational results that may shed light on the question.
