Title:
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Lecture:
Measuring Cosmological Parameters
Abstract:
I will discuss measurements of cosmological parameters, with
particular focus on measurements of the Hubble constant and dark energy.
I will also discuss some of Cecilia Payne Gaposchkin's contributions
to the study of Cepheid variables. I will give an update on the
status of the Carnegie Supernova Program, a project to followup type I
and type II supernovae using the Swope, Dupont and Magellan
telescopes at Las Campanas. Finally, I will describe our joint
current plans for building a 20-meter-class optical telescope, the
Giant Magellan Telscope.
