Title:Why the West? The Telescope and the 17th Century Revolution in
Astronomy: A Global View
Abstract:
The invention of the telescope in 1608 gave astronomers a discovery machine with which a wide
variety of celestial discoveries could be and were made by Europeans. The new instrument
transformed the practice of astronomy from a slow plodding science into an exploratory science
constantly looking for astronomical novelties. When the telescope was transmitted to China, Mughal
India, and the Ottoman Empire in the first quarter of the 17th century, an entirely different
reaction to it took place.
