Title:The Antikythera Mechanism

Abstract:In 1902, fragments of a bronze artifact bearing gear wheels, other mechanical features, and Greek inscriptions were discovered among the antiquities salvaged from a first century BC shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera. Many researchers and research teams, using direct inspection and increasingly powerful imaging technologies, have contributed over the past 110 years to our present understanding of the Antikythera Mechanism. It is now known to have been a device for displaying chronological and astronomical cycles and the apparent motions of the heavenly bodies, a sort of Cosmos simulator. The present talk will review some new findings and lingering puzzles.
