Title: SCUBA - A Revolution in Submillimetre Astronomy

Speaker: Ian Robson

Abstract: The Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array, SCUBA, has released ground-based submillimetre astronomy from the pursuit of the specialist and/or the grimly determined observer to a mainstream technique. I will present an overview of the challenges of submillimetre astronomy, a very brief history of the subject pre-SCUBA, a description of SCUBA, and the resulting dramatic explosion of new science from its use on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope.
