Astrophysics Strategic Mission Concept Study
This is a concept study of the technology development required in the next
decade in order to realize the Gen-X mission in the following decade. The study
builds on the successful 2004-2005 Vision Mission (VM) Study by refining the
mission architecture and defining detailed technology development plans to
enable the required mission parameters. The requirements are based on an
updated review of the science case and the baseline mission architecture is a
streamlined and cost effective concept enabled by the Ares V launch
capabilities that builds on two prior VM architecture options.
This program uses the IDC to study the mission design and to develop realistic
costs for the technology development phase and the life-cycle cost for the
mission. A detailed technology development roadmap is being developed that
describes the approach on how to manufacture, assemble, test, and adjust
on-orbit the deformable mirror shells, considering the risk-benefit tradeoffs
based on credible costs. Candidate science instruments are being matched to a
range of the possible telescope parameters to provide detailed technology
roadmaps. Results will be presented to a Decadal Survey Workshop and a final
report will be submitted to NASA.
