In the event of storms or other emergencies, SAO employees are to call the Center for
Astrophysics information number, 617-495-7311, for a recorded message relative to a possible
closing of the Observatory. The recorded message should commence on or about 7:15 a.m.
Should a storm or other emergency develop during regular working hours, the SAO Human Resources
Director will announce work cancellation by notifying each Associate
Director and Department Manager or their designated backups. It is the responsibility of the
person contacted to notify all employees within that division or department.
Where all modes of transportation are affected by stormy weather, employees should be granted,
at the discretion of their supervisors, reasonable administrative leave for late arrival (but not in
excess of two hours).
Refer to the section of this handbook, Leave Guidance for Weather-related Dismissals and Delayed Arrivals, for detailed information regarding charging time during these weather-related emergencies.
