DUTIES: Reporting to the Director of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the incumbent serves on the director’s senior team and, as
supervisor of the Office of Advancement and External Affairs, oversees a multifaceted program of CfA philanthropic gift and grant
activities as well as fundraising, press and public relations, special events and public programs. These programs are national and
international in their scope and involve activities in sites across the U.S. and internationally. These programs are critical in enabling the
Center to carry out its programs of astronomy and astrophysics research and education and to enhance its international reputation for
excellence in these fields. While the incumbent is an employee of the Smithsonian Institution, the work is performed on behalf of the
Center for Astrophysics.
The principal responsibility is to supervise philanthropic gift and grant activities, including major gifts, special project funding, corporate and
foundation relations, planned giving and operating support. The incumbent is the Observatory’s authority on philanthropy and advises the
director, associate directors and deputy directors in matters pertaining to private support. This includes identifying funding sources to meet
the priority funding needs set by the Director and his team, creating and pursuing effective strategies for securing philanthropic support and
providing stewardship to all donors and private grantors. The incumbent is accountable to the Director of the CfA and to the Director of
External Affairs at the Smithsonian Institution.
The incumbent also supervises a wide range of communications programs related to the CfA Director’s Office, and serves as the
Observatory’s liaison to the Smithsonian’s Office of Government Relations and Office of Special Events and Protocol, the Harvard
University Development Office and FAS Development Office, and with key Congressional offices and the district and federal level for
matters pertaining to CfA priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Candidates must possess a minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 13 in the normal line of
progression which should demonstrate extensive experience in philanthropic gift and grant activities, as well as, fundraising, press and public
relations, special events and public programs. Experience in non-profit, research and development or complex higher education is preferred.
Travel is a regular part of the duties.
