Astronomers use theoretical calculations to understand how planets, stars, galaxies, and other objects form and evolve with time. Using analytic estimates and numerical simulations, theorists calculate and then try to visualize the appearance of hypothetical objects. By comparing simulations with reality, we improve our knowledge of the physical processes involved in the origin and evolution of astronomical objects across space and time.
