Steps to transfer "ADS Private Library" publications into Mendeley

PREREQUISITES: A Mendeley Desktop client
Publications list in ADS' private library

  1. Open an ADS Private Library in ADS Classic.
  2. Go to the end of the Private Library listing and click "Select All Records."
  3. From 'Return' dropdown choose option "Refman format (UTF-8) and "Save to file" and any 'Sort by'
Option. This will produce a Filename.txt file (the name will be formatted as the 1st bibcode in the publications list followed by .txt) that is saved.
  4. Click "Retrieve selected records."
  5. Open Mendeley Desktop client
  6. Choose 'All Documents' in 'My Library' in the upper left pane
  7. Click "Add Documents" in Mendeley toolbar.
  8. Locate Filename.txt file and 'Open.'
  9. Individual document records are added to "All Documents" with the 1st record highlighted for easy recognition. The records will show up in the "recently Added" folder of Mendeley Desktop.
  10. Click "Sync Library" on the Mendeley Toolbar and newly added records appear in your Mendeley Web account.

NOTE: In some cases, especially with article abstracts, corrections will need to be made. Check the metadata for each record after importing for completeness.

EndNote

Steps to transfer "EndNote Library" publications into Mendeley

To import your EndNote library, you need to first export your references to an 'EndNote XML' file and then import that into Mendeley Desktop.

  1. In EndNote, select the references that you want to import into Mendeley Desktop, and click File > Export...
  2. In the window that appears, there is a box labeled 'Files of type:', in that box select 'XML (*.xml)'
  3. Choose a name for the file and click the 'Save' button
  4. Open Mendeley Desktop and click File > Add Files
  5. Select the file which you exported from EndNote and click Open

In addition to the EndNote XML format, you can also export references to Bibtex and RIS format in EndNote which Mendeley Desktop can also import. In EndNote select Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager. Check the 'Bibtex Export' and 'RefMan (RIS) Export' options in the list that appears then close the window. Then go to File > Export... and select the 'Text File' type. In the box labeled Output Style, select either Bibtex Export or 'RefMan (RIS) Export'. In the filename field, enter a name ending in ".bib" for Bibtex or ".ris" for RIS export and click 'Save'.

Papers

Working with Papers

Importing References from Papers:

  1. In your Papers library, highlight the references you want to export.
  2. Under the File menu, choose ‘Export…’ and choose the Refman RIS option. Choose a location and save the file.
  3. In Mendeley Desktop, under the File menu, choose ‘Add Files… ‘, set the ‘Files of type…’ to RIS. Chose the file you created in step 2 and click Open. This method only transfers reference information.

Importing PDFs from Papers:

  1. In your Papers library, highlight the references whose PDFs you want to export.
  2. Under the File menu, choose ‘PDF Files and Media’. Choose a folder that you’ve set to be the Mendeley Watch Folder. (You can set this up in Mendeley under the File menu.)
  3. Once the PDFs have been saved, Mendeley will import these PDFs. They will appear in your library with citation information that has been collected by Mendeley rather than transferred. Any custom metadata is not imported, and there may be incomplete citation information for some of the PDF files.

Exporting references and PDFs from Mendeley to Papers:

  1. In Mendeley Desktop, highlight the references you want to export.
  2. Under the File menu, choose ‘Export…’ and choose the EndNote XML format. Give your file a name and save the file. You can use the RIS format if you prefer, but the XML format transfers your PDF files, too.
  3. In Papers, under the File menu choose Import… . Select the file you just saved and set the Import Option to EndNote Generated XML. Click Import.

Zotero

Working with Zotero

Importing References from Zotero:

  1. In your Zotero library, highlight the references you want to export.
  2. Right click and choose ‘Export Selected Item/s…’ and choose the RIS option. Choose a location and save the file.
  3. In Mendeley Desktop, under the File menu, choose ‘Add Files… ‘, set the ‘Files of type…’ to RIS. Chose the file you created in step 2 and click Open. This method only transfers reference information.

To export the entire Zotero Library:

  1. Click on the Actions gear and choose 'Export Library.'
  2. Choose appropriate format. Choose a location and save the file.
  3. In Mendeley Desktop, under the File menu, choose ‘Add Files… ‘, set the ‘Files of type…’ to appropriate choice. Choose the file you created in step 2 and click Open.
