Comparison of the residuals shown above for the observations on 2003
July 23 and Aug. 13 with the residuals shown when the observations were first
published on MPEC 2006-R16 indicates a rather disturbing state of affairs.
The earlier residuals were remarkably consistent, given that the images
were obtained over a span of three weeks and were described as being "very
faint". The Minor Planet Center considers that it is unproductive and
unhelpful to potential follow-up observers when searches for very marginal
precovery images of a short-arc object are made in conjunction with
unrealistically precise orbital computations. Accordingly, these particular
observations are being removed from the MPC files.
