SITE-SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES FOR THE E-BUILDING MACHINE SHOP 6/17/04
1. Kevin Bennett is the on-site Shop Supervisor for the Bldg E Machine Shop. The Shop Supervisor has the authority to revoke the shop privileges of anyone whom he sees working unsafe.

2. The E-Building Shop may only be used for CfA-related projects.

3. In general, the Building E Shop must be used during regular hours (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM Monday through Friday). More experienced workers may use the shop after hours ONLY if: a.) their supervisor approves doing the work after hours because it is necessary to meet a deadline and a CfA employee accompanies the person using the shop. b.) the Building E Shop supervisor is notified.

4. No one is allowed to work alone except the Shop Supervisor, Working alone requires the use of a "Man Down Alarm".

5. All users must provide one of the following: a.) Certificate of completion of the "Harvard College Machine Tool Operation and Machine Safety course" (see below) b.) Certificate of completion of the Shop Equivalency Test (see below) c.) Machinist certification. Note: The Harvard Physics Shop offers the course and the test. Contact Stan Cotreau at 5-5217

6. A list of those who are allowed to use the E-building machine Shop will be kept by the E-Building Shop supervisor who will send status updates to the Model Shop supervisor for posting on the Model Shop Web page. The list of those permitted to use the E-Building Shop will be posted prominently in the E-Building Shop by the Building E Shop Supervisor and on the Model Shop’s web page and includes the following: a.) All those who have access to the building E Shop. b.) Their affiliation/group with the CFA c.) Whether they have been cleared as "Shop User" (those who have been cleared to use the machinery) or "Non-user" (those who need to get into the shop for administrative purposes, but are not cleared to use the machinery). d.) Contact persons phone numbers. e.) Emergency numbers as required.

7. Newly-trained personnel must be supervised by the Shop Supervisor. This must be scheduled at the Shop Supervisor’s convenience.

8. Any and all injuries must be reported immediately as follows: Regular Hours: Kevin Bennett, Karen Lawley (5-7478) and Charlie Hickey (5-9238) Off-hours: The Harvard Control Center: 5-5560

GUIDELINES FOR MACHINE USAGE: Note: All users are required to observe these guidelines. 1. Never place hands, body parts or clothing near a running spindle. 2. Safety glasses and safety shoes and must be worn at all times. 3. Use Safety guards when available and follow all Safety Rules at all times 4. If you move a vise or milling heads, re-indicate them when you are done. 5. Tighten everything properly. 6. The equipment that you use must be oiled prior to use. 7. The air compressor, air conditioner and lights must be shut off upon leaving the shop. 8. Any machine that is to be left SET-UP must be tagged as such. No machine is to be touched that is marked as SET-UP. A sign with the words "SET UP" and a contact name with phone number must be affixed to the machine. 9. Broken equipment, as well as lost or damaged items must be reported immediately to the E-Building Shop supervisor. 10. All inspection equipment must be kept clean and oiled as needed. 11. Keep all cabinets, drawers, and tool boxes closed immediately after use. 12. All collets and spindles are to be cleaned before use. 13. After using any machine, you are responsible for cleaning that machine and the surrounding area completely with the exception of the floor. 14. Machine guards must be in place at all times when machinery is in use. 15. Hammers should rarely be used. (Vises can exert a pressure of 4,000 lbs. per sq. inch using only the handle supplied.) 16. If your operation is going to be noisy, please let others know in advance when possible. If it’s noisy from vibration, it’s a bad setup. Change it. 17. Air use should be kept to a minimum. ( noise pollution ) Brushes should be your first choice to clean a machine. Follow up with the air as needed. (This keeps noise down and chips out of the machine ways.) 18. Be careful, use common sense, ask questions. If you are unfamiliar with a set up or operation or if you are unsure, don’t do it. Wait and ask some one with experience on the type of setup. 19. Conversations should be done at close proximity. Do not yell across the shop. 20. All rules are subject to change by the management. Your privilege to use the shop may be revoked if you fail to follow all of these rules.
