A graphic of the evolution of the universe, from the big bang "dawn of time" to the present day 13.7 billion years later. CfA astronomers have studied the emission of neutral hydrogen atoms during the "dark ages" immediately after 380,000 years, when all of the hydrogen was neutral and the first stars had not yet been born.
