Weekly Science Update

3C296
A composite image at optical and radio wavelengths of jets of streaming plasma expelled by the central black hole of the galaxy 3C296. The jets are nearly a million light years long. 3C296 is a member of the class of modest radio emission sources; new observations of the class suggest that prior to this stage of evolution they went through a period of fragmentation with intermittent bursts of activity. In the image, visible light is in blue, and radio is in red.
