The image above shows a full-disk view of the sun, taken by the AIA 171 Angstrom channel, which images plasma at about 1 million degrees Kelvin. The flare is occurring in the bright region in the upper left portion of the disk.

This image shows a zoom in on the flaring region taken by the XRT telescope in the Thin Beryllium channel, which images plasma greater than 2 million degrees Kelvin. The color table has been reversed, so that the darker portions of the image are where the radiation is the most intense.
