Release No.: 03-14: Historic GRB Discovery For Release: June 19, 2003
 | Artist's conception of the tremendous explosion known as GRB 030329 as seen from a hypothetical nearby planet. Observations proved that a hypernova explosion, much more violent and energetic than a typical supernova, was the source of the gamma-ray burst. CfA astronomers Kris Stanek, Tom Matheson, and colleagues turned the powerful eye of the MMT Telescope at Mount Hopkins, Arizona, to GRB 030329 less than 14 hours after the burst was detected by NASA's HETE satellite.(Credit: David A. Aguilar, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)
