The Nature of Extremely Red Field Galaxies

Dr. Richard Elston, University of Florida

Abstract

It has been roughly 10 years since the first deep near-IR images of the sky revealed a puzzling population of objects with very red optical to near-IR colors. It now appears that this is a mixed population containing z>1 galaxies with old stellar populations, dusty starburst galaxies and AGN at 16). Each of these three contributors to the red galaxy population will be reviewed.
