CfA Safety: Scope of the Laboratory Safety Committee

The primary goal of the Center for Astrophysics Laboratory Safety Committee (CfA-LSC) is to assist the Harvard/SAO Health and Safety Officer, Principle investigators, and employees in maintaining a safe laboratory work environment and to prevent property damage. In order to carry out this goal, the CfA-LSC has adopted the following items as its charter. The CFA-LSC will:

  • Assist the CfA Safety Officer in the development, maintenance, updating and distribution of a CfA laboratory safety manual. It is the intent of this manual to provide the principle investigator and the laboratory employee a single point source for current laboratory safety information.

  • Assist the CfA Safety Officer in developing and maintaining a laboratory safety training program. The CfA-LSC should assist in the development and review of safety training programs for common and specific laboratory tasks at the observatory.

  • Conduct semi-annual laboratory safety inspections. As part of this task, the CfA-LSC should assist in the development, maintenance and distribution of a laboratory safety checklist. The intent of the checklist is to assist the principle investigator and the laboratory employee in identifying and maintaining a safe work environment.

  • Assist the CfA Safety Officer in deciding how OSHA, Harvard and S.I. safety standards will be implemented at the CfA.

  • Recommend/Review added safety requirements above OSHA, Harvard, or SAO standards.
