Hi Claudia,
     Thanks for your help, With strace, I have tracked down
the problem. I have made a new beta version 1.1.3 and you can
download the new version from the beta site
http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/sma/miriad/download/

     the tarball pakage is smaMiriad08Dec2010.tar.gz


     I think the problem should be fixed in this version. Please
untar the package and install it on your desktop (thistle2).
Please test smalod by running it on thistle2  directly from your
desktop and via ssh. Please let me know if the problem remains or you
find other bugs.
