The JPL Catalog And Identification of Spectral Lines

The Miriad task smauvspec supports a feature of plotting the UV spectra along with the spectral line transitions selected from the JPL catalog. This feature is useful for general Miriad users to identify spectral lines contained in the UV data using the JPL catalog. This method works well for a compact source at the phase center. For an extended source, the S/N of the lines may be degraded due to large phase change across the source. For weaker line in an extended source, we recommended users to carry out the line identifications in the image domain after full calibrations. Here are two exmaples to show users how to use the JPL catalog in spectral line identifications in the UV domain.
