SUNRISE is an international project aimed at high-resolution observations of the sun using a 1 meter aperture solar telescope on a NASA long-duration balloon flight. The talk gives an overview of the SUNRISE observatory, and its first science flight from Kiruna, Sweden to Somerset Island, Canada. The data include UV images never seen before, and high-quality magnetic field measurements. Some preliminary data are presented which give promise of gaining new insight into solar surface magnetism.
