The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, founded in 1890, is the astronomy and astrophysics research unit of the Smithsonian Institution, which was founded for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge." At SAO, we study the Universe and its many constituents, through basic research, the development of innovative technologies and the support of future research scientists; and we advance public understanding of science - particularly through astronomy programs for schoolchildren, educators and all people with curiosity about our Universe.
Private gifts provide critical funds to maintain our leadership in astronomy.
Unrestricted gifts offer the most flexibility because they allow us to nurture
promising but untested ideas and other research that is not supported by established
funding entities (such as NASA and the National Science Foundation.)
Checks and Online Credit Card Gifts: You may make a
gift to SAO through the Smithsonian Institution's secure online gifts
webpage. Click here to make your online gift.
Your gift will be acknowledged in writing and
will include a receipt for income tax purposes. If you wish your gift to
be anonymous, please check
the appropriate box on the form.
