If emergencies arise, you can call our EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER at the Asticou Inn: (207)-276-3344, or 1-800-258-3373. Tell the receptionist that this is an emergency call for SOHO 7, and we will try to assist you as soon as possible. Please use this option only for a real emergency.
The SOHO observational capability can be greatly extended by frequent collaborations with ground based observatories, ACE, Yohkoh, Spartan 201, TRACE, Ulysses, and other spacecraft.
Reviewing the results obtained so far will allow us to assess the progress toward understanding coronal holes and the solar wind, and will present the user community with input to shape the future program of SOHO science.
ABSTRACT BOOK:
List of Speakers, Discussion Leaders and Reporters
The meeting will explore the following scientific topics:
1.
Solar wind models from the sun to 1 AU: Constraints
by "in situ" and remote sensing measurements,
2.
Energy input, heating and solar wind acceleration in
coronal holes,
3.
Coronal hole boundaries and interactions with adjacent
regions,
4.
Composition and elemental abundance variations in the
solar atmosphere and solar wind.
Each topic
will be introduced by an invited lecture on the morning or early afternoon
of 29 September. The participants will then break into parallel workshop
sessions led by a discussion leader. The workshop sessions will continue
through 30 September. A list of sub-topics to be covered by each workshop
session and a list of speakers for short introductory talks on each sub-topic
will be provided in the final
announcement
of the meeting which is planned to be distributed in mid June. Sub-topics
and introductory speakers will be selected from contributed poster abstracts
and other sources. There will be a joint session on all topics on 1 October
where each Reporter will present a summary of his/her respective session
and considerable time will be provided for discussions.
Posters
All participants
are encouraged to submit abstracts for contributed posters on the general
topics of the meeting. Sub-topics for the discussion sessions will
be selected from the contributed papers and other sources. Discussion Leaders
will ask some participants to introduce sub-topics with short oral
presentations.
All participants are encouraged to take part in the discussions and to
prepare one or two viewgraphs for presentation during the workshop sessions.
Details of the poster schedule and policy will be provided in the final
announcement.
Abstract Deadline
The deadline
for the submission of abstracts is 15 May 1998. We strongly encourage
all participants to submit their abstracts via the world wide web using
the template provided below. Authors who do not have electronic access
should contact Raid Suleiman by email (click here) or at
the following address: Center for Astrophysics, Mail Stop 50, 60
Garden Street, Cambridge MA 02138, USA to make special arrangements
to submit an abstract by other means. Only abstracts with lead authors
who have registered and for whom we have received the registration fee
by 15 May 1998 will be
included in
the program. A participant can be the lead author on only one contributed
poster.
E-Mail & World Wide Web Access
A limited number of workstations will be available at the Asticou Inn for e-mail and World Wide Web access.
It is now possible to pay the registration fee for the SOHO 7 Workshop and
purchase banquet tickets with credit cards. This can be done by contacting
the Asticou Inn directly at (207) 276 3344 or (800) 258 3373. The e-mail
address is "asticou@acadia.net". It is also possible to pay by check in US
dollars made out to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory by sending it to:

The registration
fees are as follows:
Discounted
registration received by 30 April...................................$130
The registration fee covers the following: Admission to all scientific sessions, refreshments at breaks, three buffet lunches, and conference materials. The workshop banquet requires a separate fee and tickets should be ordered at the time of registration. The fee for accompanying persons to attend the conference banquet should be submitted with the application. INFORMATION
Transportation
The most convenient
airports to the meeting site are: 1) Bangor International Airport (about
1.5 hour by car), Portland Jetport (about 4 hours by car) and Logan International
Airport, Boston (about 6 hours by car). There are also smaller airports
in the Mount Desert Island area including Bar Harbor Airport (about 30
minutes by car). Bar Harbor Airport is serviced by Colgan Air, which flies
between Boston and Bar Harbor Airport. Colgan Air is offering a special
group rate from Boston to Bar Harbor and return of
$140. Please
make your reservations by calling (888-265-4267, toll-free inside
the US, or 703-331-3121, outside the US) or by sending a FAX
(703-331-3116) and reference the SOHO 7
Workshop in your reservation request.
Note that Colgan Air's phone system may transfer you to
Continental Airlines to make reservations (especially if you
press '1' when asked to make a reservation), but Continental does
not know about the special SOHO 7 group rate. To be sure you
reach Colgan, stay on the line (if you get the answering machine)
to talk to a Colgan representative,
and do not press '1' to make reservations via Continental.
If you have
time, the drive to Northeast Harbor from Boston or Portland is pleasant.
Just follow Interstate Route 95 to Maine. North of Freeport, ME, you may
wish to take a leasurely drive along the coast on US Route 1 via Brunswick
ME, or follow Route 95 or the Maine turnpike to Augusta and then
Ground transportation
in Down East Maine is convenient by car. You can use a car to get to and
from the hotels and the Asticou Inn, to restaurants, and to explore Acadia
National Park and Bar Harbor. You would need to rent a car at one
of the airports or arrange a car pool. Timely reservations are needed to
ensure rental car availability. If you have any difficulty making such
arrangements and would like help arranging transportation from the Bangor
or Hancock County Airports or between your hotel and the Asticou Inn, please
contact Mari Paz Miralles (by e-mail at mmiralles@cfa.harvard.edu; by telephone
at 617 496 7925, or by mail at Center for Astrophysics, Mail Stop
50, 60 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA 02138).
A map of Mount
Desert Island is available here. To reach the Asticou
Inn, go to Mount Desert Island via the Trenton Bridge on Route 3. You will
cross Thompson Island. Just as you reach Mt Desert Island, the road forks.
Leave Route 3 which follows the left fork and Bear RIGHT
