Description:
Dust and gas are well-mixed in much of the interstellar medium. So, observations of dust, although lacking the velocity information provided by spectral-line maps, can give a very clear picture of the column density structure of the ISM. Some of the work described below shows that not all methods for measuring the amount of dust along a line of sight give the same answer, and that one need be careful when choosing a technique.
