Observers traveling to FLWO or MMTO are required to read the
FLWO Visitor information guide. Visitors to the mountain
must be familiar with the difficulties of driving a mostly
unpaved, single-lane mountain road where weather conditions
can change rapidly, especially in winter. Safety precautions
must be followed to protect all drivers. The mountain roads
can be very dangerous for unprepared and inexperienced drivers.
All observers using FLWO vehicles must
read the FLWO
Vehicle Operator's Guide
provide a signed statement that they have read the guide
provide a copy of their driver's license
If you are not sure that you have complied with this
requirement, contact Danny West at dwest@cfa.harvard.edu or
520-670-5710.
Please ensure that all students and staff traveling to the
telescopes for the first time are aware of these procedures. Visitors
who are not confident about driving on the mountain road must contact
FLWO at the email or phone number listed above to discuss other options.
Alternate transportation options include arriving at the Basecamp in
time to ride to the mountain with day time staff or with another
observer. It may be possible to make other arrangements if you contact
FLWO significantly in advance of your trip.
