Comparisons with the GEOS-CHEM

Figure 1 compares the seasonally-averaged tropospheric column ozone between GOME and the GEOS-CHEM model simulation. For a close comparison, both are with a hybrid tropopause (NCEP tropopause in the tropics and dynamic tropopause at higher latitudes). The GEOS-CHEM simulations are sampled in accordance with GOME retrievals and are convolved with GOME retrieval averaging kernels to degrade the GOME resolution. Finally, both are mapped to 2.5-longitude x 2-latitude horizontal resolution. We can see that the overall structure is very similar especially in the Southern hemisphere, but there is large discrepancy of ~5-15 DU over northern tropics and subtropics.

Figure 2 shows the evaluation of GOME and GEOS-CHEM data with the MOZAIC (1994-2002) measurements at 17 locations, which shows there are good agreement between GOME and MOZAIC at most of the locations and during most of the periods.
