Title: SETI: Science Fact, Not Fiction

Speaker: Jill Tarter

Abstract: The privately funded Phoenix Project of the SETI Institute has been systematically searching the microwave portion of the radio spectrum for signals generated by another technology. This talk will discuss searches from both northern and southern hemispheres, putting the negative results to date into a cosmic perspective. Several more years of searching will be required to complete our target list of 1000 nearby stars. We are beginning to make plans for expanding the search to reach fainter signals from more distant stars, in case the current Phoenix search of our galactic backyard fails to find evidence for SETI.
