SWS: Dr. Denise Breitburg, Biologist (SERC)

Dr. Breitburg received a BS in Biology from Arizona State University in 1975, and an MA (1982) and PhD (1984) in Marine Ecology from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

She is a Senior Scientist directing the Marine & Estuarine Ecology Lab at SERC. Her research involves studying interactions among species and the ways that individual animals, communities and ecosystems respond to changes in the environment. Her lab is particularly interested in how responses of individual organisms and variation among species shape the patterns seen over large spatial scales and in complex biological assemblages.

Recent research has focused on effects of low oxygen and nutrient enrichment of fisheries, food webs, and disease dynamics; the effects of shoreline modification on nearshore fish assemblages; and the ecology of gelatinous zooplankton. Most of the studies are centered on Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
