TITLE: Engineering Technician (Electrical Designer), IS-0802, grade 11; $67,643.00 to $87,940.00 annually
TYPE OF POSITION: Trust Fund (Non-Federal), Indefinite

DUTIES:

Supports design of and prepares drawings for electronic, electro-mechanical, and optical components of electrical assemblies and printed wiring boards for space and ground based telescopes.

Assures that all drawings conform to specifications including MIL-STD-100, MIL-T-31000, and ANSI - Y - 14; include appropriate process and materials specifications and parts lists; and satisfy all stated quality assurance and/or reliability requirements.

Prepares formal schematics, schematic capture, parts/materials lists, and component assembly drawings from preliminary sketches or verbal instructions. Prepares formal drawings and bills of materials for cable assemblies of varying degrees of complexity.

Provides technical direction to, and reviews the work of, printed circuit layout vendors.

Performs basic checking of electrical circuits and systems designs. Assists engineers in the design and construction of lab bench test setups for the evaluation of both purchased and in-house-designed instrument system components.

Provides technical data in formats compatible with Solidworks CAD/CAM software. Familiarity with Solidworks Enterprise Product Data Management (PDM) software and Solidworks Electrical Design package is desired.

Provides technical input to vendor identification and parts, components, and connectors selection. Prepares procurement specifications.

Incorporates Engineering Change Orders (ECO’s) and Document Change Requests (DCR’s) into related drawings and other engineering documentation. Maintains appropriate configuration controls.

3. From conceptual design through project completion, provides leadership in design, analysis, and documentation. Maintains a technical overview of the project in process, and has ultimate responsibility for the design and test integrity of the contract or project end item. Chooses appropriate technologies, establishes technical priorities, and performs conceptual, systems level, and detail design. Prepares cost estimates, schedules, plans, technical reports, and engineering input to project proposals; supervises engineers, designers, and technicians assigned to the project; and maintains engineering budgets and schedules. Provides technical leadership and direction to, and liaison with, hardware contractors and sub-contractors as required.

May perform electro-mechanical packaging design as requested. Must provide competent technical assistance with electronics assembly packaging and housing design.

Supports engineering design reviews, Configuration Control Board’s, and technical meetings.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

One (1) full year of specialized experience which equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this Engineering Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been close to the work performed in this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, electro-mechanical, optical and electrical or mechanical components or assemblies for scientific instrumentation. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples of specialized experience are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as experience as a technician in assembling instrumentation or test setups working from plans or procedures; experience as a mechanical technician or machinist working in fabrication and/or instrument assembly, testing, and debugging of precision mechanisms.
