SUMMARY:

This is the position of Astrophysicist (Research Assistant) at the developmental trainee level, High Energy Astrophysics Division, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The purpose of the position is to support scientific research in the area of active galaxies. The incumbentís primary task will be to complete the analysis of 3C220.3 and prepare and submit a paper reporting those results for publication.

Responsibilities:

Participate in the conduct of research in the field of active galaxies relating to data analysis, data modeling and preparing results for publication.

Assist the science group in preparation of observing proposals, including literature searches, and discussions with senior colleagues, and carrying out observations as needed.

Participate in discussions with extended SAO collaborators and visiting scientists, particularly to discuss multi-wavelength work on the JWST targets. Assist in preparation of the JWST proposal.

Assist the science group in organizing, documenting and working with the 3CRR sample multi-wavelength dataset and associated websites.

Work with the science group on publishing papers and/or presenting talks or posters at professional meetings on the results of the groupís research.

Perform other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

All applicants must meet these Basic Requirements:

A. Degree in one or a combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, space science or electronics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of astronomy, space science, physics, and mathematics with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below:

Grade 7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the grade 5 level in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Experience at this level normally would have included experience with analysing astronomical data for a research project.

OR Completion of one-year of graduate level education

OR Superior Academic Achievement (SAA).

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience are also qualifying.
