The Smithsonian offers employees a variety of benefit choices. Eligibility for benefits depends on type and length of appointment.

Federal employee benefits are determined by the Office of Personnel Management in Washington, D.C., while Trust Fund employee benefits are determined by the Smithsonian Institution.

At your new employee orientation, you will be asked to schedule an appointment with the SAO Benefits Assistant to select and enroll in various Federal and Trust Fund employee benefit programs and insurance plans. We recommend that you complete whatever enrollment forms and beneficiary designation forms you can before you come to your appointment.

You will need to provide the names and addresses of your designated beneficiaries, as well as their Social Security numbers, when you complete the forms.

Insurance plan enrollments require that you provide dependent birthdates and Social Security numbers, if applicable.
