NASA's New Eye on the Sun Delivers Stunning First Images

the Sun

Photograph taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) immediately after its CCD cameras cooled on March 30, 2010. In this representative-color image, red shows emission from ionized helium (He II) at a temperature of 140,000 Fahrenheit (80,000 Kelvin), while green shows ionized iron (Fe IX) at a temperature of 1,800,000 F (1,000,000K). The extent of the He II loop is equivalent to 30 Earth diameters.

A movie of the solar prominence changing over time. Color scheme is the same as the image above.
