Is High-Redshift Galactic Evolution Broken?

Charles Steinhardt (Caltech)

I will describe first year results from the Spitzer Large Area Survey with Hyper-Suprime Cam (SPLASH), which will eventually include 2500h of Spitzer coverage of the COSMOS and SXDS fields. Among several surprising results, SPLASH finds massive galaxies with stellar masses already at ~10^11 solar masses by z~6, which is incompatible with current models of structure formation. I will describe this and several disagreements between current observation and theory, as well as propose a new model for the growth and evolution of typical galaxies. wavelength observations aimed at revealing its composition.
