CfA Safety: Chemical Storage

  • Maintain inventory of all chemicals stored in the lab.
  • Maintain a current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each hazardous material used and stored in the lab.
  • Ensure that the contents of all chemical containers, including those used for holding intermediary reagents, are clearly labeled.
  • Provide a lip or guard on all shelving used for chemical storage.
  • Avoid storing chemicals in direct sunlight.
  • Store every chemical in a designated location and return the chemical to that location after each use.
  • Store only compatible chemicals together. (See Chemical Hygiene Plan, Appendix 1 for list of incompatible chemicals).
  • Store chemicals in secure areas to prevent the containers from breaking.
  • Store flammable chemicals in safety containers and in approved flammable liquid storage cabinets as required by the National Fire Protection Association Standard 30.
  • Store flammable liquids that require refrigeration in an approved explosion-proof refrigerator.
  • Ensure that carcinogens are secured in a locked storage cabinet and used in accordance with OSHA standards.
  • Keep fume hoods clear of chemical containers and equipment to prevent objects from interfering with air flow.
  • Store acids below eye level.
  • Store carboys below eye level.
