July 2018 SMA Event: Call for Large Scale and Standard Proposals We wish to draw your attention to the Large Scale Projects program for observations with the Submillimeter Array (SMA), which is now accepting Notices of Intent to propose. Under this program, proposals dedicated to answering major astrophysical questions having significant scientific impact requiring observing times of order 100-1000 hours are solicited. In this communication, we are also pre-announcing the dates for standard observing proposals. These calls are for the 2018B semester with observing period Nov 16, 2018 - May 15, 2019.

November 2016 EHT Collaboration Meeting November 29 - December 2, 2016 SMA Event: Collaboration This is the third in a meeting series designed to bring together the full EHT community, from instrument builders to theoretical modelers, for the purpose of fully exploiting the unique opportunities that the EHT provides. Past EHT meetings have followed a traditional format of talks by EHT scientists as well as experts from a diverse set of fields. For EHT 2016 - with critical observations and organizational efforts underway - the meeting structure will include a strong component of science, but shift in focus to the collaboration itself: the collaborative structure, working groups (both technical and scientific) and the logistics and preparations for the upcoming observations in 2017.

August 2016 SMA Science in the Next DecadeOctober 27-28, 2016 SMA Event: Workshop SMA observations have resulted in new insights into a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena, from protoplanetary disks to high redshift galaxies. The much larger international Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is now in routine operation at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. To maintain a leading role in the ALMA era, the SMA project has embarked on an ambitious, staged, strategic upgrade to dramatically improve its sensitivity and observing speed. The new wideband SMA -- the wSMA -- will be ideally suited to spectral line surveys and studies of submillimeter sources in the time domain, as well as a wealth of other applications. This workshop will provide a forum for astronomers from the SMA collaboration and user community to promote, discuss, and elaborate key science cases for wSMA observations in the next decade. The workshop will also facilitate the forging of collaborations to help realize these new science opportunities.

June 24, 2014 Celebrating a Decade of Discovery SMA Event: Conference Website Ten years ago, eight antennas on the summit of Maunakea, Hawai'i, united to form a telescope unlike any other. Since then the Submillimeter Array (SMA) has examined the universe in unprecedented detail and provided new insights into subjects as diverse as planetary formation and distant galaxies. Its achievements were celebrated earlier this month at a conference in Cambridge, Mass.

July 11, 2011 SMA Community Day SMA Event: Conference Website The meeting format will consist of both scientific and technical talks with ample time for discussion and questions. The scientific program will run before lunch. In the early afternoon, a technical program will introduce the SMA to assist those thinking about or planning SMA observations. While primarily intended for the CfA community, the meeting is open to astronomers from other institutions. There is no registration fee, but if you plan to attend, we would appreciate it if you could register below so that we can determine how many people to expect.

March 31, 2009 SMA Joins Upcoming "Around the World in 80 Telescopes" Webcast SMA Event: Site no longer available. As one of the major observatories, the Submillimeter Array was invited to, and has signed up to, participate in 'Around the World in Eighty Observatories'. This is a 24-hour web-cast organized by ESO as part of the 100 Hours of Astronomy Global Cornerstone Project to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, 2009. 100 Telescopes

February 10, 2009 CfA SMA Science Symposium 2009 SMA Event: Conference Website The purpose of this meeting is to present recent results from science projects undertaken at the CfA with the SMA, and to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas about SMA results and capabilities among the broader community. This meeting is open to anyone at the CfA who is interested. Participants may attend for the full day or for any part of the day, including the coffee break/poster sessions. There is no need to register, and there is no registration fee.

February 10, 2009 SMA Image Contest 2009 SMA Event: Conference Website The Submillimeter Array (SMA) announces its first Image Contest. Much like the annual NRAO "Radio Astronomy Imaging Contest", the purpose of this contest is to gather visually compelling images based on SMA data from the SMA user community to be used for a variety of purposes, including public outreach.

June 13-16, 2005 Submillimeter Astronomy in the era of the SMA SMA Event: Conference Website The Submillimeter Array (SMA) announces its first Image Contest. Much like the annual NRAO "Radio Astronomy Imaging Contest", the purpose of this contest is to gather visually compelling images based on SMA data from the SMA user community to be used for a variety of purposes, including public outreach.
