Backgound

  • The NSF awarded the ALMA North America Prototype Antenna to SAO in 2011

  • SAO - ASIAA partnership to deploy the antenna for operation in Greenland

  • ASIAA lead the refurbishment of the telescope for the cold environment as well as development of the first three receivers installed, operating at 86GHz, 230GHz and 345GHz

  • The project plans a two phased approach

    • establish operations and prove performance at Thule Air Base

    • transfers the telescope to the summit for long term and higher frequency observations

  Science goals

  • Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to image the shadow of the Black Hole at the center of the galaxy M87

  • Submillimeter astronomy in single dish mode
