ISOPHOT Polarimetry--Galactic Center Region

Goal is to measure polarization with ISO at what would be a particularly revealing position in light of existing KAO and CSO polarimetry of the Galactic Center.

This information was contributed by Roger Hildebrand and complied by Alyssa Goodman. Roger says: "For the Galactic Center I suggest a) a point on the Sickle with 1950 coordinates 17h 43m 2s, -28deg 47' 30". That is where we saw the strongest polarization at 60 microns but very low polarization at 350 microns. A 100 micron point would be of very great interest. The 100 micron flux density os probably about 1/4 that at SgrA*. b) a point off the Sickle and off of the filaments with coordinates 17h 42m 50s, -28deg 49' 00". The 100 micron flux density there is unknown. but judging by the IRAS map there should still be plenty for ISO."

These suggestions are translated into sources "1a" and "1b" below.

A low-resolution scan of the 100-micron polarization map is at the upper right in this figure (click to enlarge). The original can be obtained through Roger Hildebrand .
