DASO Circular No. 1 Issued: 2004 Aug. 17, 02:45 UT The DISTANT ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES OBSERVATION (DASO) Circulars are a private publication by staff of the Minor Planet Center and are intended to disseminate astrometric observations of distant artificial satellites. Williams (gwilliams@cfa.harvard.edu) Astrometry submissions to mpc@cfa.harvard.edu (Subject line = "ART SAT") EDITORIAL NOTICE This is the first Distant Artificial Satellites Observation circular. For some time the Minor Planet Center (MPC) has been interested in distant artificial satellites (artsats), in as much as they can (and have been) confused with natural objects. Until now, there has been no method of distributing the astrometry of these distant artsats that the MPC has received over the past years. This new series of circulars is intended to allow such observations to be disseminated to the community in a way that is documented and referenceable, in a similar fashion to the observations of minor planets and comets. Although these circulars are not an official publication of the MPC, it is the aim that the MPC's high standards will be carried over to the DASO. Future circulars will be issued at irregular intervals, as the flow of incoming observations dictate. It is anticipated that future circulars will also include orbital computations. Ephemerides will not be handled on these circulars, but they will be available via the Earth-Orbiting Space Junk Tracker page (http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/SpaceJunk/SpaceJunk.html). An archive of all back issues of this circular series will be found on the CfA's ftp site (ftp://cfa-ftp.harvard.edu/pub/DASO/), as will the complete file of astrometric observations (ftp://cfa-ftp.harvard.edu/pub/DASO/Obs/). It is out intention that these circulars will be indexed in the ADS (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/). NOTE ON DESIGNATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL OBJECTS For certain named objects, the name will begin in column 6 of the observational record and extend no further than column 12. For other objects, the COSPAR designation (ignoring the century) will begin in column 6 and extend to column 12. For example, observations of MESSENGER will be coded as "MESSENG" and observations of 1965-058A will be coded as "65058A". The meaning of the other parts of the observational record are as given in http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/info/OpticalObs.html. The references will be coded as "D" (to indicate to DASO) plus a four-digit zero-left-justified circular number.
