Images: Example of a Super-Distant Supernova
One of 10 high-redshift (z>1.5) type-Ia supernovae in the Subaru Deep Field, SNSDF0806.50, at redshift z=1.7, exploded 10 billion years ago.

The supernova is highlighted by an arrow in the bottom panel of the inset, imaged in June 2008. The top panel shows the same area a year before the supernova occurred. The unchanging red spot is the distant galaxy in which the supernova occurred.
