Map of Mount Desert Island

Location & Time

The SOHO 7 Workshop was held on 28 September - 1 October 1998 at the historic Asticou Inn, Northeast Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island. Northeast Harbor is surrounded by Acadia National Park which offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States with its rocky shore line and its coastal mountains. Bar Harbor, which is less than 30 minutes away by car, has restaurants, night spots, shopping and a myriad of recreational activities. The reception desk at the Asticou Inn will open at 2:00 pm on 28 September and the keynote lecture will be at 5:00 pm. The scientific meeting will end at 1:00 pm on 1 October 1998.

 Registration & Hotel Information

Late September is a popular time to visit Down East Maine because it is  the beginning of the fall foliage season. Please register for the meeting and make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. We request that you  register for the meeting by mail and send a check in US dollars for the  registration fee. Room reservations should be made directly with the Inn or with designated hotels. We are holding over 100 rooms at the Asticou Inn and nearby hotels until 1 June 1998 and are in the process of trying to arrange for additional accommodations. More information about registration and hotel reservations is provided later in this announcement.

If emergencies arise, you can call our EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER at the Asticou Inn: (207)-276-3344, or 1-800-258-3373. Tell the receptionist that this is an emergency call for SOHO 7, and we will try to assist you as soon as possible. Please use this option only for a real emergency.

Keynote Lecture & ESA Reception

The scientific program will begin on 28 September 1998 at 5:00 pm with a Keynote Lecture (speaker to be announced) on a topic that is broadly related to the scientific theme of the meeting. This will be followed by a reception hosted by the European Space Agency at the Asticou Inn.

The SOHO Science Working Team would like to review the impact of SOHO observations on our understanding of the nature and evolution of coronal holes and the acceleration and composition of the solar wind. Together the coronal and particle instruments on SOHO offer a comprehensive observational capability to investigate those physical processes in the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region and corona that provide the energy input that leads to coronal heating and acceleration of solar wind from coronal holes.  In that regard, it is important to examine the roles of both the large scale magnetic structure and small scale structure such as bright points, polar plumes, spicules, and macrospicules and their relationships to large scale wind streams and to the microstreams originally observed by Ulysses in the flow from polar coronal holes.

The SOHO observational capability can be greatly extended by frequent collaborations with ground based observatories, ACE, Yohkoh, Spartan 201, TRACE, Ulysses, and other spacecraft.

Reviewing the results obtained so far will allow us to assess the progress toward understanding coronal holes and the solar wind, and will present the user community with input to shape the future program of SOHO science.

List of Speakers, Discussion Leaders and Reporters

The meeting will explore the following scientific topics:

1.  Solar wind models from the sun to 1 AU: Constraints
by "in situ" and remote sensing measurements,

2.  Energy input, heating and solar wind acceleration in
      coronal holes,

3.  Coronal hole boundaries and interactions with adjacent

4.  Composition and elemental abundance variations in the
      solar atmosphere and solar wind.

Each topic will be introduced by an invited lecture on the morning or early afternoon of 29 September. The participants will then break into parallel workshop sessions led by a discussion leader. The workshop sessions will continue through 30 September. A list of sub-topics to be covered by each workshop session and a list of speakers for short introductory talks on each sub-topic will be provided in the final
announcement of the meeting which is planned to be distributed in mid June. Sub-topics and introductory speakers will be selected from contributed poster abstracts and other sources. There will be a joint session on all topics on 1 October where each Reporter will present a summary of his/her respective session and considerable time will be provided for discussions.

All participants are encouraged to submit abstracts for contributed posters on the general topics of the meeting.  Sub-topics for the discussion sessions will be selected from the contributed papers and other sources. Discussion Leaders will ask some participants to introduce sub-topics with short oral
presentations.  All participants are encouraged to take part in the discussions and to prepare one or two viewgraphs for presentation during the workshop sessions. Details of the poster schedule and policy will be provided in the final announcement.

Abstract Deadline

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 May 1998.  We strongly encourage all participants to submit their abstracts via the world wide web using the template provided below.  Authors who do not have electronic access should contact Raid Suleiman by email (click here) or at the following address: Center for Astrophysics, Mail Stop 50, 60 Garden Street, Cambridge MA 02138, USA to make special arrangements to submit an abstract by other means. The most convenient airports to the meeting site are: 1) Bangor International Airport (about 1.5 hour by car), Portland Jetport (about 4 hours by car) and Logan International Airport, Boston (about 6 hours by car). There are also smaller airports in the Mount Desert Island area including Bar Harbor Airport (about 30 minutes by car). Bar Harbor Airport is serviced by Colgan Air, which flies between Boston and Bar Harbor Airport. Colgan Air is offering a special group rate from Boston to Bar Harbor and return of $140. Please make your reservations by calling (888-265-4267, toll-free inside the US, or 703-331-3121, outside the US) or by sending a FAX (703-331-3116) and reference the SOHO 7 Workshop in your reservation request. Note that Colgan Air's phone system may transfer you to Continental Airlines to make reservations (especially if you press '1' when asked to make a reservation), but Continental does not know about the special SOHO 7 group rate. To be sure you reach Colgan, stay on the line (if you get the answering machine) to talk to a Colgan representative, and do not press '1' to make reservations via Continental.

If you have time, the drive to Northeast Harbor from Boston or Portland is  pleasant. Just follow Interstate Route 95 to Maine. North of Freeport, ME, you may wish to take a leasurely drive along the coast on US Route 1 via Brunswick ME, or follow Route 95 or the Maine turnpike to Augusta and then
take ME State Route 3 to Mount Desert Island. Those less interested in sight seeing may wish to fly to Bangor and drive east on Route 1A to Ellsworth and then follow Route 3 south to Mount Desert Island. The Bar Harbor Airport is located on Route 3, and it is just 30 minutes drive from the Asticou Inn.

Ground transportation in Down East Maine is convenient by car. You can use a car to get to and from the hotels and the Asticou Inn, to restaurants, and to explore Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.  You would need to rent a car at one of the airports or arrange a car pool. Timely reservations are needed to ensure rental car availability. If you have any difficulty making such arrangements and would like help arranging transportation from the Bangor or Hancock County Airports or between your hotel and the Asticou Inn, please contact Mari Paz Miralles (by e-mail at; by telephone at 617 496 7925, or by mail at Center for Astrophysics, Mail Stop 50, 60 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA 02138).

A map of Mount Desert Island is available here. To reach the Asticou Inn, go to Mount Desert Island via the Trenton Bridge on Route 3. You will cross Thompson Island. Just as you reach Mt Desert Island, the road forks. Leave Route 3 which follows the left fork and Bear RIGHT
onto Route 102 leaving the service station on your left. Proceed on 102 until you come to a traffic light. Turn LEFT at the light onto Route 3/198 (i.e., the two routes are together at that point). Continue straight on Route 3/198 toward Northeast Harbor. Just before you reach the town, you will pass a  large stone walled house on your left.  Shortly thereafter, Route 3 will turn left toward Bar Harbor. Take the LEFT turn on Route 3 (i.e., do not follow the road into Northeast Harbor). The Asticou Inn is 550 yards beyond the turn on the right side of the road.

Other ground transportation includes the following:

Bus Service: Vermont Transit bus service operates a daily service between downtown Bangor and Bar Harbor (only once a day) during the summer months. Call (802) 864-6811 for current information. Concord Trailways runs two routes a day from Boston. One is a four-hour express from South Station or the airport in Boston, to Bangor, with one stop in Portland. The other, a six hour coastal route also runs Boston to Bangor, but it has 11 stops in between. This company also offers connections to New York City.

Local Transportation: Downeast Transportation runs a local service which connects Mount Desert Island towns and Ellsworth. There is a daily service from Bangor airport (departure 3:15pm) to Ellsworth (arrival 4:05pm), and Ellsworth (departure 12:25pm) to Bangor airport (arrival 1:15pm). There is also a Mondays only service between Bangor airport (departure 2:10pm)  and Bar Harbor (arrival 3:30pm), and Bar Harbor (departure 9:25am) to Bangor airport (11:00am). Write to Downeast Transportation, P. O. Box 914, Ellsworth, ME 04605; or call (207) 667-5796.

Rental Car Services: Budget, Hertz operate out of the Bar Harbor airport and Avis, Budget, Hertz, National at the Bangor airport.

Airport Taxi Services: Two taxi services serve the Bar Harbor airport full time.  Airport Taxi 667-5995, and A. B. Atlantic Taxi, 288-5585. The Airport Shuttle at the Bangor airport can pick you up at the airport and take you anywhere. Fares from Bangor to Mount Desert Island are $65 per person; for more than one person the price is $65 plus add $10 for each additional person.

The towns of Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor have taxi service. The rates are set around $1.20 a mile.

The Asticou Inn and the designated hotels all have adequate parking. There is no additional charge for hotel guests and meeting participants.

Weather conditions vary, so you should plan to dress in layers. Fall temperatures normally vary from a lowest overnight temperature of 30 F to a highest afternoon temperature of 70 F. You may encounter rain and fog at any time. The fall foliage is spectacular and the Sun does shine.
