The Smithsonian Office of Equal Employment and Minority Affairs in Washington, D.C. is
responsible for the direction and oversight for the Smithsonian's EEO/Affirmative Action programs, including AA/diversity plans, discrimination complaints, special emphasis programs, training/outreach, and small and disadvantaged business utilization.
At SAO, the responsibilities of EO Officer have been delegated to Laura Conway, from the Department of Human Resources. Each year, we develop and submit our Affirmative Action/Diversity Plan, via OEEMA, to the Secretary. Our progress is monitored and reported to senior management of the Institution, and through them, to EEOC and Congress.
The Discrimination Complaints Program processes EEO complaints through EEO counseling,
mediation, and investigation. EEO complaints based on race, color, religion, sex (include sexual harassment),
national origin, age (includes persons forty years of age or older), or handicapping condition, can be made
by contacting an EO Counselor within 45 calendar days of the matter giving rise to the complaint or
the effective date of the personnel action.
Information regarding SI OEEMA policies, programs, processes may be found at http://prism.si.edu/oeema/index.html.
